Relevance: The health of mothers and children is a crucial indicator of sustainable development and the social well-being of a country. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, the protection of motherhood and childhood remains a priority of state policy; however, issues such as maternal and perinatal mortality, complicated pregnancies, and infectious diseases in newborns persist. Improving the health care system in this area requires a comprehensive, intersectoral approach. Investments in protecting women’s and children’s health contribute not only to improved demographic indicators but also to strengthening the nation’s overall potential.
Purpose of the study: To analyze literary sources and regulatory documents in the field of maternal and child health, determine the current state of maternity and childhood services in Kazakhstan, and outline the achievements and promising directions for the development of this area of healthcare.
Materials and methods: The online databases MEDLINE, PubMed, and Scopus were used to prepare this review. Statistical collections of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2014–2024, regulatory legal acts in the fields of obstetrics, neonatology, and pediatrics, the National Project “Quality and Affordable Healthcare for Every Citizen – Healthy Nation,” presidential messages to the people of Kazakhstan, and other official sources were analyzed in detail.
Results: An analysis of literary sources and domestic regulatory documents in the field of maternal and child health was conducted. The current state of maternity and childhood services in Kazakhstan, the achievements made, and directions for further improvement were examined. Key performance indicators of the service are presented, and current issues in the strategic development of the healthcare sector are highlighted.
Conclusion: A comprehensive approach—including improved health care, prevention, and education—is necessary to achieve sustainable reductions in child mortality and to improve women’s health. Particular attention should be given to strengthening primary health care and fostering a culture of responsible reproductive behavior.
Key words: maternity and childhood services, maternal and child health, premature birth, prematurity, perinatal mortality, neonatal mortality, morbidity, personnel policy, continuous training of specialists.
