Evaluation of the effectiveness of progestin-primed ovarian stimulation in IVF/ICSI programs in oocyte donors: a retrospective observational non-randomized study

Abstract

Relevance: Stimulation of superovulation remains the main factor ensuring the success of assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs. To date, effective stimulation protocols have been developed based on individual patient parameters. The Progestin-primed controlled ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol has been used in IVF/ICSI infertility treatment since 2015. This protocol is adaptable for all patients, including normo-, hypo-, and hyper-responders, due to its low risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and the ability to use human chorionic gonadotropin in combination with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists as a trigger.

The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of micronized progesterone for superovulation stimulation in oocyte donors and its impact on euploid embryo developmentin IVF/ICSI cycles.

Materials and Methods: A non-randomized retrospective study including 200 ART programs (IVF/ICSI) in egg donors who underwent superovulation stimulation from January 2020 to September 2021 using various superovulation stimulation protocols.

Results: The number of mature oocytes, blastulation rate, number of good-quality embryos, and embryo euploidy level did not differ significantly between the groups (p > 0.05). No cases of premature ovulation were observed in either group.

Conclusion: The PPOS protocol is an effective and safe protocol for oocyte donors and patients not planning embryo transfer in a recent cycle.
