Prevalence of hypomagnesemia among pregnant women in Almaty and Astana (Kazakhstan): A study using a standardized questionnaire

Relevance: Hypomagnesemia is a common condition among pregnant women and may adversely affect both the course of pregnancy and neonatal health. In Kazakhstan, this problem is exacerbated by dietary habits, limited intake of magnesium-rich foods, as well as environmental and socio-economic factors. However, systematic data on the prevalence and risk factors of hypomagnesemia in large cities remain scarce. Therefore, a study of pregnant women in Almaty and Astana using a standardized questionnaire and laboratory analysis is relevant, as it helps clarify the scale of the problem and determine priority directions for prevention and management.
The study aimed to assess the frequency of hypomagnesemia by trimester of pregnancy in Almaty and Astana (Kazakhstan) using a standardized questionnaire.
Materials and Methods: A standardized questionnaire was applied to evaluate magnesium deficiency among 1,000 pregnant women (500 from Almaty and 500 from Astana). Data collection was conducted in person, with informed consent obtained from all participants.
The results were processed using statistical methods, which ensured the reliability of the findings and allowed identification of regional differences.
Results: The analysis revealed a high prevalence of hypomagnesemia: 44.1% in Almaty and 35.1% in Astana. Deficiency was observed across all trimesters of pregnancy, with an increase in frequency toward the later stages.
Conclusion: The study demonstrated a high rate of hypomagnesemia among pregnant women in both cities, highlighting the need for timely diagnosis and preventive strategies. The use of a standardized questionnaire developed in line with the recommendations of the UNESCO International Center for Trace Elements allows more accurate assessment of magnesium status and facilitates the implementation of appropriate corrective measures.
